Managing Week 5: SLEEP, EXERCISE, LESS INTERNET

By September 18, 2018Mindfulness, News

You’re 1/3 into the fall semester- this is the typical time when students start to feel a lot of stress and it’s the time in the semester when Theatre is the busiest with all shows in various stages of rehearsals. Recognize where you are!

In May 2017, a study was published in the Journal of American College Health. The study examined changes in stress for first semester freshmen undergraduates and identified predictors of stress.

Results: Stress was elevated during examinations periods. Women reported a greater stress level than men. Increased stress level was significantly associated with lower sleep quality and greater negative emotions (fear, anger). Exercise was an effective stress coping strategy, while other coping methods (Internet usage, meditation, and self-isolation) were associated with higher stress. Social media usage did not influence stress level.

Solutions:

MORE SLEEP

EXERCISE

DECREASE GENERAL INTERNET USAGE

DO NOT ISOLATE YOURSELF– if you need to talk to someone, connect with a friend or a faculty member or go to the counseling center! https://www.k-state.edu/counseling/
