Classes for the summer semesters are starting soon (June 8th, to be precise)! These ALL are distance courses. 2 of the 4 (270 & 573) are REQUIRED for the Theatre major, while 630 counts toward the 500+ level course requirement for the Theatre major. 235 will count for a general Arts and Sciences elective for majors and as an Theatre elective for minors. Theatre 235: Introduction to the Art of Film. This 4 week course (June) is a basic introduction to film. We will cover mise-en-scene, acting, writing, sound, criticism, film theory, camera work and the history of cinema. There are weekly screenings that students will watch on their own time. Films screened include: Jaws, Amelie, Rear Window, Breathless, Singin’ in the Rain, GoodFellas, Get Out, Citizen Kane and Frida.
Theatre 235 is a 3 hour elective that counts toward the Film Studies Certificate and fulfills the required Fine Arts requirement.

Theatre 630: American Cinema. This survey course covers the history of American film, from its inception to its development as a major economic and cultural force on global screens. Topics include the musical, African-American directors, film noir, queer cinema, genre cinema, silent cinema and a multitude of topics selected by students. There are weekly screenings that students will watch on their own time.
Films screened include: Psycho, Footlight Parade, Bonnie and Clyde, Do the Right Thing, Halloween, Unforgiven, Apocalypse Now, The Shining and Blue Velvet
The class itself will have weekly discussions films. There will also be powerpoints, recorded short lectures (10 minutes) and supplemental videos.
Theatre 630 is an elective that counts as a Fine Arts requirement, 3 hours for a 500+ level course AND counts toward the Film Studies Certificate.

Theatre 573: Theatre History II. This 8 week course (June/July) has no prerequisites and can be taken before Theatre History I. It covers the history of Theatre across Europe and North American from 1800-Present. There is a great deal of emphasis on experimental approaches to performance as well as exploring the plays of such noteworthy dramatists as Anton Chekhov, Henrik Ibsen, Tennessee Williams, Samuel Beckett, August Wilson, Suzan-Lori Parks and Paula Vogel. The class itself will have once a week online discussions of the works. There will also be powerpoints and recorded short lectures (10 minutes) and videos.

Theatre 270: Introduction to Theatre. This 4 week course (July) will present a basic survey of the dynamics of Theatre. You will read 5 plays and complete readings from the textbook. There will be once a week online discussions. Powerpoints will be provided as will pdfs of the plays to be read.
