Ruth Gurgel, Ph.D., Associate Professor of Music Education, is presenting her research at the 14th International Conference for Research in Music Education this month. Her session, titled “Intersections of Engagement Theory and Culturally Relevant Pedagogy in the U.S. Choral Classroom,” explores how student agency and Gloria Ladson-Billings’ (2022) theory of Culturally Relevant Pedagogy intersect in choral music education.

This important research is also featured in her book, Taught by the Students: Culturally Relevant Pedagogy and Deep Engagement in Music Education, which dives deeper into student-centered practices and the transformative power of listening to the students.
