BIO
Goldberg was an aspiring New York actor in 1987 when he stumbled into his first meeting of the AIDS Coalition to Unleash Power (ACT UP), the vigorous grassroots advocacy group that changed the course of the fight against AIDS. Soon Goldberg was recognized as the “chant queen,” who used his actor’s training and magnetism to lead some of the organization’s most visible street actions.
Goldberg’s memoir, THE BOY WITH THE BULLHORN (Fordham University Press, 2022), braids a social history of ACT UP with his own embrace of activism. He records the movement’s fierce outrage (and outrageousness), internal conflict, strategizing, and humanity, and traces his evolution from timid bystander to full-throated leader. THE BOY WITH THE BULLHORN serves as both a personal account and a blueprint for building an effective struggle for social justice
