On 2nd Thought

By December 3, 2024News

As the semester ends, I’m reminded of how tricky year-end remembrances can be—you always risk forgetting someone or something important. But let me say this, I am so grateful for all of you—for being here on days when you felt inspired and, just as importantly, on days when it was harder to show up. Your presence matters, and we support you because we need to support each other to learn how to do good theatre together. In this program, “Plays well with others” ranks higher than an A.

To our student designers this year: you were phenomenal—thank you for your creativity and dedication. To the freshmen in our classrooms and on our stages: we see you, and yes, we talk about you behind your backs—but don’t worry, it’s all good things. Keep that up, it makes for good gossip. To everyone else: for the most part, you were outstanding.

A special thank you to Jen Vellenga. If you’re in her class, you already know she’s a great teacher. I’m lucky to know her as a colleague, a friend, and someone instrumental in bringing me here to K-State. A huge thank-you, Jen, dear friend.

The spring shows are in good hands. And as a reminder, straight from the conspiracy files of Emmett Spaw: you can always create your own content. If you want to design, direct, or collaborate, talk to your faculty mentors about how you can make that happen. This program is here to help you grow and showcase your ideas.

Friday is just around the corner, so take care of yourselves. Be well to do well. I and the faculty have seen you accomplish amazing things this year—in our classrooms, on our stages, and beyond. Let’s keep that momentum going.
