Theatre 630/870: Greek and Roman Theatre
This course – open to both undergraduate and graduate students – explores the drama and culture of performance in both Ancient Greece and Ancient Rome. We will examine a variety of plays by Aeschylus, Euripides, Sophocles and Aristophanes while also analyzing the paratheatrical components of Athenian society. The class will also analyze the varieties of performance modes in Rome, from Plautus’ comedies to imperial spectacles. Through seminar discussions we will work toward a better understanding of the Greek and Roman influence upon drama and performance. We will study various Greek and Roman performance modes, methods of production, aesthetic criteria, gender roles and spectator culture. In addition, we will research contemporary productions of classical works to better understand the challenges of adapting and performing these plays for modern audiences.
