Hester borns a letter A on her skin for Abortionist. The play starts out with Hester and her friend Canary Mary talking about Canary’s affair with the Mayor. Hester is working on saving money to buy her boy’s freedom from prison. Hester finally gets enough money with the help from the Butcher to have a Picnic with her son. We later find out it wasn’t her son because he was supposedly killed in there. Even later on in the show we find out Monster the escaped prisoner is her boy. The First lady married to the Mayor is pregnant, but she doesn’t know whose child it is and she dears it could be Monster’s.
