The new Film and Media Studies Certificate will be available to students starting in Spring 2020, but you can begin to take classes now. In fact, as Theatre students, you have already taken courses that count toward it! The certificate is only 12 hours and chances are you have taken classes that go toward it. Also, in Spring 2020 I will be teaching THTRE 235: Introduction to the Art of Film which will count toward the certificate. This June I am teaching THTRE 630: American Cinema, which also counts toward the certificate. We have spots open!
To see eligible classes and learn all about the certificate, please go to https://www.k-state.edu/english/certificate/film.html
A number of faculty members across campus (including myself) have worked to establish the certificate over the past year and a half. We believe this is a great way to consolidate your courses, learn about film/media, acquire skills that will make you marketable and have another ‘certificate’ on your transcript.
We have alumni who presently work in television and film as actors, writers, talent agents and other positions. I have already had alumni and colleagues contact me about potential internships at Sony, Warner Bros. and Overbrook (Will Smith’s company; the series Cobra Kai) for next summer.
If you are interested in classes or the certificate, please email Shannon at sbskelton@ksu.edu ASAP. Simply put Film Studies in the subject line.
