A Dialogue on the Future of Housing in American Cities
A SHORT FILM
Roles: (5)
Lead Roles:
David the Revolutionary: Professor at the local university, steeped in academic discourse and theory on political science and philosophy. Convinced the systems of growth politics and capitalist profit incentives skew urban institutions towards disenfranchisement of the oppressed instead of support. Looking to convince policymakers to restructure instead of just reform.
Frank the Reinforcer: Member of the city council. Free market libertarian mixed with old guard McCain Era conservatism. Determined to reduce political intervention in market housing conditions
Harvey the Reformer: Mayor of the City. Shares David’s disapproval of capitalist systems and oppressive structures, but fervently believes that change is only possible within the existing levers of change and power
Supporting Roles:
Robert the Community Leader: Leader of a local community advocacy group for tenants in the city. Skeptical of the ineffectual nature of establishment politics and the priorities of traditionally elected leaders.
John the Citizen: Ordinary Taxpayer/Citizen. Non-voting. ‘Disillusioned’ with all things politics and takes a fatalist approach to any systemic challenges of the housing crisis. Experiences the problems, offers perspective, not alternatives.
