History of Film Costume

This course looks at the history of costume design for film and how it reflects the society of the time. With a start in the silent era of the 1920s and moving forward to the 1960s, the course will discuss the impact of German Expressionism, the discovery of King Tutankhamen’s tomb, Prohibition, the Great Depression, World War II, the Cold War and the rise of the middle class on film costume design. The class will learn about the great designers such as Adrian, Banton, Beaton, Travilla and Edith Head, as well as the glamour kings and queens they dressed. Films will be watched, analyzed and discussed, looking at the art and significance of the design to the production and how it was impacted by the world.
