A juried art contest is currently underway to select five pieces of sculpture for display along the Third Street corridor in Downtown Manhattan from May 2020 to April 2021. As of November 18, 2019, 16 art submissions have been received. The contest will close on January 3, 2020, or when the total number of entries reaches 150, whichever comes sooner.
Each of the selected artists will receive a $1,500 honorarium courtesy of a grant from the Greater Manhattan Community Foundation (GMCF). Monies will be administered through a project fund established with the City of Manhattan. The City of Manhattan, Manhattan Parks and Rec, and the Arts and Humanities Advisory Board will work closely with Downtown Manhattan Inc and other partners to promote and coordinate the Public Art Exhibition with the Third Thursday art walk events downtown (starting again in May 2020).
Installation sites have been designated along the route from Blue Earth Plaza to the Osage Street pocket park, serving to connect lodging, shopping and dining establishments with entry to the historic downtown area. The proposed timeline for this project would be as follows:
- Call Opened: October 10, 2019
- Deadline for Entries: January 3, 2020, via EntryThingy website. This portal will close on January 3 or whenever 150 entries are reached, whichever is sooner.
- Notification of Artists: March–April 2020
- Installation of Selected Works: May 4–15, 2020
- De-installation of Works: April 19–30, 2021
