Dance 395: Dance Composition I
T/Th 1:05-2:20pm
Prof. Kate Digby kdigby@ksu.edu
Dance Composition I is an examination of compositional structure through the lens of human movement. Applicable for students interested in poetry, architecture, music, theatre, visual art, landscape design – anyone who is interested in the process of ‘making’. We start the semester with a variety of small targeted projects exploring one aspect of design and finish with developing individual choreographic projects, which may absolutely integrate visual, musical, theatrical, textual and other elements with the movement components.
Dance 705 / Movement: Fundamentals, Analysis, and Observation – 3 credits
T/Th 11:30am-12:45pm
Prof. Kate Digby kdigby@ksu.edu
Study, application, observation, and analysis of somatic movement fundamentals, and their use in performance, education, and therapeutic practices.
*For graduate and undergraduate students
Movement Fundamentals is an exploration of somatics – the experience of the lived body. We do a survey of various somatic techniques including Yoga, BodyMind Dancing™, Moving for Life© (a low-impact dance aerobics designed for people in cancer treatment and recovery), The Batdorf Technique (emotional-physical connection & self-regulation that is especially valuable for actors), and Bartenieff Fundamentals (gentle recuperative functional movement for optimal health) and then students do individual research projects on a somatic technique of their choosing and a final project integrating somatic work into an area of individual interest.
